At least half of my family was originally from Ireland. After my high school graduation, my great aunt, my mother, and I traveled to Ireland for two weeks to get “back to our roots.” As an 18 year old, I was skeptical about some aspects of the trip (which included scouring birth and death records in old churches, and literally walking through cemeteries looking for our family name). But, we had a wonderful time reconnecting as a family and we have many fond (and funny) memories from the trip.

This cowl has a mosaic pattern that winds around the cowl in an almost magical fashion. It reminds me of the wide green pastures, rocky fences, Celtic town names, and sheep that dotted the countryside. Where are your roots?

Techniques Required:
Single increases and decreases, provisional cast-on, Kitchener stitch, mosaic knitting

Final Measurements
Circumference: 24” (61 cm)
Height: 17” (43 cm)
The width and height of the cowl are easily adjustable

Gauge
24 St / 40 Rows = 4”/10 cm in Garter Stitch using US5 (3.75 mm) needles after a light blocking
Exact gauge is not critical, but a significant difference will affect the size of the cowl and yarn requirements

Recommended Yarn:
Black Trillium Fibres, “Lilt Sock” (85% Merino, 15% Mulberry Silk) Fingering wt, 405 yds (370 m), 3.5 oz (100 g) Or similar weight yarn to achieve gauge
One skein each in:
  • MC: Tiny House (Approx. 380 yds (347 m) needed)
  • CC: Sivia (Approx. 80 yds (73 m) needed)

Notions
US5 (3.75 mm) circular needle, or size to obtain gauge, at least 24”/60 cm long
US6 (4.0 mm) circular needle, or size to obtain gauge, at least 24”/60 cm long
Crochet hook (for provisional cast on)
Tapestry needle
Stitch markers (5)
Waste yarn

Pattern Notes:
  • The pattern and shaping of the cowl are written, while the mosaic section is only charted. The pattern also includes a schematic.
  • Pattern has been tech edited and test knit to ensure a wonderful knitting experience!
